What was the Renaissance?
The Renaissance is the era of time directly after the Middle Ages (1400's-1600's), and is usually referring to Europe. After the Black Death (Bubonic Plague) an estimated 2/3 of Europe's population was dead. This meant there was now adequate food, shelter, and jobs for the remaining population. Wages were heightened and trade resumed, and parts of Europe such as Italy were incredibly wealthy.
Since people weren't entirely focused on keeping each other alive, there was now time to engage in recreational activities such as painting, sculpting, and literature. There was also a flourishing of intellect and innovation, resulting in important inventions such as the watch, the flushing toilet, and a even a primitive form of the airplane. Literature was proving to be a more and more important part of culture and society, and is the focus of this website.
The power of the Renaissance sparked dozens of poets, play-wrights, and authors to pursue writing careers. This blaze of literary genius influenced today's modern writing in techniques, style, and language use. The printing press significantly changed literature for the better. It lead to a more educated and informed public. Now everyone had a reason to be able to read and write. Books were on the rise and their prices fell.
